wHY DOes Baton Rouge mean the red stick in french?|||The Native Americans in the area used poles of cypress wood, which has a red tint, with hanging animal hides to mark the limits of their hunting territories. The first French explorers gave them the name "Red Stick" or Baton Rouge.
